What happens when you cross a factory-made plastic laundry basket and a Filipino craftsperson? You get a wonderfully imaginative object. German product designer Cordula Kehrer and traditional basket weavers from the indigenous Aeta people of the Philippines have combined forces to create a new line of products called Bow Bins. With the support of the fair trade NGO Preda, these colourful woven mash-ups are now available throughout the world. And they're a hit. The playful baskets are made from sustainably harvested rattan – the pliable stems of palm trees popular in the making of everything from clothing to furniture.
