What colour are your eyes? If you haven’t looked in a while you may want to double check, for they are capable of changing hue over time. There are only six colours they can possibly be: amber, blue, brown, grey, green or hazel. The pigmentation found within your iris, especially the amount of dark pigment known as melanin, will determine the colour of your eyes.
The most prevalent eye colour in the world is brown, this includes anywhere from 55-79% of all people. Next comes blue eyes at just 8-10%. Unlike brown eyes, blue eyes have low levels of pigmentation. Third place is a tie, at 5%, between people with hazel or amber eyes. Hazel eyes are a combination of brown and green shades. Green comes in at 2%. Worth noting is 86% of people from Ireland and Scotland have either blue or green eyes. And last, but not least, are people with grey eyes – only 1% of the population. However, having grey eyes does not put you in the most unique grouping. That honour is reserved for those with heterochromia – individuals with different coloured irises. Famous people with this feature include Joe Pesci, Kate Bosworth and Benedict Cumberbatch.
