Although British artist Jonathan Callan is an avid reader, he would rather be using books to make sculptures. His organic-like constructions are held together with screws, allowing the sides of the books to become the focus. Most of the colour you see is inherent to the publications that Callan incorporates into his sculptures, however, sometimes he enhances the exposed sides of the pages with paint. “I'm very self-consciously treating almost every book as an object...I almost don’t care what the book is about...I’m interested in doing something to the book as an object to emphasize the fact that language is incapable of dealing with certain aspects of life,” says Callan. The words contained in the books found in Being Unfair, 2007 (shown above) are hidden from view, making them irrelevant. This artist doesn’t judge a book by its cover – he judges it by its sides.
