When two male chameleons challenge each other over a female or the rights to a particular location, tempers can boil over. During these confrontations the creatures become noticeably brighter in colour. Their heads, as well as the stripes on their bodies, become accentuated during heightened aggression. The chameleon that presents the brightest colours the soonest, will typically win the fight. This display of force before battle is a signal to the opponent that they have the option to back out of the ensuing altercation. Some animals strut their feathers, others raise their hackles – the chameleon lights up like a neon sign.
