In 1850, the Japanese built an artificial island in Tokyo Bay for purposes of defending the city. This manmade landform, called Odiaba (meaning fortress) was given a new purpose in the 1990s with the development of numerous new buildings and amenities. The efforts attracted large hotels, a convention centre, shopping malls and corporations such as Fuji Television. The photo above shows the multi-coloured exterior doors of SOHO – a modern 13 storey live/workspace that has become a popular destination for Instagramers – especially for night shots.
The island of Odaiba will host several events during the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, including beach volleyball, marathon swimming and gymnastics. The games, scheduled for 2020, have been postponed due to COVID 19. In the meantime, the SOHO will continue to attract young urbanites and curious photographers.
