Magenta

                         muh-jen-tuh  /  Italian  / 1857

Magenta is the name of a town in northern Italy. In 1859 the Battle of Magenta occurred during the second Italian War of Independence. This bloody battle resulted in 7,000 casualties, all of whom were buried in one mass grave. Not long afterwards a new purple-pink dye was developed – it was named magenta in honour of that significant victory.
