Rosalie Gascoigne (1917–1999) was a talented Australian artist who produced assemblages from a variety of natural and man-made objects. She is perhaps best known for her pieces made from bright, yet weathered, roadside traffic signs. By cutting and rearranging segments from different reflector signs she created poetic typographic abstractions that had a cryptic quality about them. In 1982 she participated in the Venice Biennale, the first woman to ever represent Australia at the prestigious event.
