Former graphic designer Grant Hamilton uses a vintage Polaroid SX-70 camera to take bold abstract images of fragments of colour. The resulting photographs are simple, direct and unadulterated – all of which flies in the face of today’s digitally enhanced imagery. For several years now Hamilton has been isolating these colourful moments from public signs and graphics. “Maybe I’m a frustrated painter or something. I like Rothko quite a bit and some of the other modern painters that used big areas of color.” Perhaps the biggest challenge he faces is the dwindling supply of original film for his vintage camera.
