Katherine is a Vancouver-based multimedia artist whose work often revolves around colour. She loved creating mosaics with her prized colourful wooden block set when she was young. After having her own children, Katherine realized that her son had a similar fascination with Lego. Her children have since been diagnosed with autism. Katherine, who is also autistic, has ADHD and refers to herself as an AuDHD artist. “In order for me to enjoy Lego,”says Duclos, “I had to just start seeing it as a modular color material, not as a means of building three-dimensional structures. Once I saw the potential as an abstract color process, I was right back to using color as a means of externalizing an internal order.” Her work is playful and inventive – demonstrating the unlimited freedom one can have with a toy known for being so formulaic and rigid.
