A once neglected plot of inner-city land in the suburbs of Mexicali, a Mexican city on the Californian border, now has a colourful, award winning playground. DVCH De Villar Chacon Arquitectos, a Mexican studio, has helped to revitalize the area with the addition of a pink playground known as "Kinder Park.” Variations of the colour pink can be found on everything from sports fields, grandstands game cubes to a scalable pyramid. The colour clearly isolates the recreational area from the surrounding buildings and provides a strong visual brand for the children’s play space.
Pink fosters many emotional connections, of which calmness, joy and creativity are among the most apparent. According to the website Colorpsychology.org, “stronger shades like fuchsia have been linked to confidence and energy.” Mexicali’s Kinder Park has been a great success with neighbourhood children and their families, attracting them to the pink facilities like a magnet. It just goes to prove that colour can have a positive influence on environments designed to encourage fun, imagination and active play.
