Damien Hoar de Galvan is a Boston-based artist who creates what he calls “painted sculptural objects.” His abstract assemblages consist of many small puzzle-like pieces of colourfully painted wood. “The final shapes,” says Hoar de Galvan, “are not generally known beforehand and are made intuitively. I don’t always have quick, concise answers to what they mean or why I make them.” The sculptures, although rather small in size, draw you in – much like a bug is attracted to a bright light. He establishes awkward yet appealing compositions that seem to be both immediate and carefully planned. Perhaps Hoar de Gravlan sums it up best when he says, “I think that if art isn’t mysterious it’s not very interesting.”
